Google Unveils AI Payments Protocol With Crypto and Stablecoin Support

Google has launched the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), a framework that lets AI agents handle secure payments across fiat, stablecoins, and crypto.
Backed by more than 60 partners—including Coinbase, Mastercard, PayPal, and the Ethereum Foundation—AP2 uses cryptographically signed “Mandates” to verify user transactions and authority.
As part of its rollout, Google introduced the x402 extension, designed with Coinbase, Metamask, and others to enable crypto rails and programmable token payments inside AP2. Analysts say the move positions Google at the forefront of AI-driven commerce, bridging traditional payments with web3 and accelerating adoption of stablecoin-powered transactions.
