Google Pulls AI Image Generation From Google Earth After Misinformation Concerns

Google has temporarily withdrawn a newly launched AI image generation feature in Google Earth just one day after its release. Following widespread concerns that it could be used to create convincing fake satellite imagery of real-world locations.

Powered by Google’s Nano Banana 2 model, the tool allowed users to generate photorealistic scenes overlaid on Google Earth’s satellite and 3D imagery using simple text prompts. While intended for creative and educational purposes. Users quickly demonstrated how it could fabricate realistic images of events such as bombings, refugee camps, and natural disasters. Raising serious concerns about misinformation and the misuse of seemingly authentic geospatial data.

Although all generated images were watermarked as AI-generated and were never integrated into the core Google Earth experience. Google decided to pause the feature while it develops stronger safeguards against abuse. The incident highlights the growing challenge technology companies face in balancing powerful generative AI capabilities with the need to preserve trust in visual information and prevent the spread of disinformation.
