The U.S. Department of State and South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted a New York City symposium on Tuesday to address North Korea’s exploitation of the virtual asset industry.
The event focused on disrupting North Korea’s revenue streams for weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs, as DPRK cyber actors reportedly stole around $3 billion in virtual assets from 2017 to 2023. Over 40 countries participated, discussing strategies to improve global collaboration and information sharing to counter these threats.
The symposium highlighted current DPRK cyber threats, theft prevention methods, and the need for cooperation between governments and the private sector.
