Expert in Cybersecurity Throws Weight Behind Elizabeth Warren’s Anti-Crypto Legislative Initiative

Renowned cybersecurity expert Steve Weisman is endorsing Senator Elizabeth Warren’s proposed anti-crypto legislation, affirming that it would effectively combat crypto scams.
Weisman expressed his support during a special Senate hearing, emphasizing the necessity of aligning legislation with evolving technology. Acknowledging the challenges posed by crypto mixers in ensuring anonymity for investors, Weisman commended the government’s successful tracing of accounts after the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack but highlighted the complications introduced when funds enter mixers. While recognizing legitimate privacy concerns, he underscored the urgency in addressing fraudulent activities.
Notably, in April, Jake Chervinsky, Chief Policy Officer of The Blockchain Association, criticized Warren’s bill, deeming it a de facto ban on crypto assets in the US. Chervinsky argued that the legislation, introduced in December 2022, could criminalize legitimate crypto activities like mining and staking without effectively combating illicit finance, leading to difficulties in garnering co-sponsorship.
