European Union Hails Euro’s 25-Year Legacy Amid Acknowledgment of Present Challenges

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde, along with other European Union leaders, recently celebrated the euro’s 25th anniversary, highlighting its role in granting the bloc “greater sovereignty in a turbulent world.”
Lagarde emphasized that the euro has simplified life for European citizens and protected growth and jobs. Initially launched with 11 countries in 1999, the currency project now involves 20 countries, making the euro the “world’s second most important currency.” Despite facing challenges, such as a near-parity situation with the US dollar in October 2023, the euro has rebounded and is currently trading around €1:$1.11.
Lagarde and her colleagues commend the measures taken to ensure the euro’s survival, including the harmonized banking supervision system and the European Stability Mechanism. However, they acknowledge the need for further actions to navigate present challenges, suggesting a focus on defense, green, and digital transitions. Lagarde proposes bringing the euro into the digital age, potentially through the introduction of a digital euro alongside physical currency.
