EU Weighs Blanket Ban on Crypto Transactions With Russia to Strengthen Sanctions

European Union officials are considering a blanket ban on cryptocurrency transactions involving Russia. As part of expanded sanctions targeting digital asset use in evading economic restrictions.

The proposal would go beyond previous measures by prohibiting EU-based entities and platforms from engaging in crypto flows with Russian counterparts, including digital ruble and Russia-linked services. In an effort to close loopholes used for sanctions avoidance.

Lawmakers and regulators argue that targeted sanctions against specific exchanges and tokens have been circumvented, prompting discussions on broader restrictions that would include any virtual-asset transactions tied to Russia. While some member states warn that consensus will be difficult due to enforcement challenges. The move reflects growing concern that digital assets have been exploited to bypass traditional sanctions frameworks.
