Ethereum’s Dencun Upgrade Pushed to 2024: Enhancing Performance and Security

The highly-anticipated Dencun upgrade for the Ethereum blockchain, originally expected in 2023, faces a delay, with Ethereum’s core developers now targeting a release in 2024.
The primary goal of the Dencun upgrade is to enhance Ethereum’s performance, focusing on scalability, security, and user-friendliness. Notably, it introduces “data blobs,” a novel transaction type to optimize data storage and accessibility for layer two (L2) rollups on the Ethereum platform. Originally divided into Deneb (Consensus Layer) and Cancun (Execution Layer), the developers now consider additional testing necessary before deploying the upgrade safely on the mainnet.
After discussions, it was evident that Execution Layer teams were ready to begin testing on the Goerli testnet, but Consensus Layer teams needed a few more weeks for codebase adjustments. The mev-boost pipeline is yet to undergo testing across all clients. As a result, the anticipated Goerli testnet fork is expected to take place no earlier than late November. Typically, testnets require a minimum of two weeks between forks, suggesting that the Dencun upgrade is likely to debut on the mainnet after the 2023 holiday season and into 2024. Developers are actively working on testing and coordination to ensure a seamless rollout when the time comes.
