ENS Cancels Namechain L2, Will Deploy ENSv2 Directly on Ethereum Mainnet

Ethereum Name Service has halted development of its planned Namechain Layer 2 network and will instead deploy ENSv2 exclusively on the Ethereum mainnet.
The decision comes as Ethereum’s base layer has seen significant scalability improvements, dramatically lowering gas fees and reducing the need for a separate Layer 2 solution. According to the ENS team, this shift allows the project to leverage Ethereum’s strongest security and decentralization infrastructure while maintaining its planned upgrades.
Despite abandoning the proprietary L2 rollout, ENSv2 will still deliver its major enhancements — including streamlined domain registration, a redesigned registry structure, and improved cross-chain support — with the same roadmap intact. ENS developers say the experience and lessons from the Namechain effort will help strengthen interoperability with other Layer 2 networks, even as the protocol remains rooted on Ethereum’s first layer for greater stability and simplicity.
