ECB Selects 36 Payment Providers for 2027 Digital Euro Pilot

The European Central Bank (ECB) has selected 36 payment service providers, including major banks, fintech companies, and payment firms, to participate in a 12-month digital euro pilot scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027.

The pilot will use a beta version of the digital euro to test real-world payment functions, technical infrastructure, operational processes, and user experience across the ECB and 19 eurozone central banks. Participants include leading financial institutions such as Deutsche Bank, UniCredit, Revolut, and Stripe, reflecting strong industry interest in Europe’s central bank digital currency (CBDC) initiative.

The project is part of the ECB’s broader strategy to modernize Europe’s payment infrastructure, reduce reliance on foreign payment networks, and prepare for a potential full launch of the digital euro by 2029, pending final legislative approval from the European Union.
