Chinese State Media Flags Potential Misuse of Cold Storage Crypto by Corrupt Officials, Evading Scrutiny

The Chinese state-owned newspaper, Legal Daily, issued a cautionary message highlighting concerns that corrupt officials might be channeling cryptocurrencies into cold storage to evade investigations.
Experts at the China Integrity and Legal Research Association’s 2023 annual meeting emphasized the role of digital assets in enabling bribery. Zhao Xuejun from Hebei University Law School stated that corrupt government personnel in China resort to offline, cold storage methods to escape online scrutiny and transfer crypto assets abroad. Mo Hongxian from Wuhan University Law School stressed the need for governance and regulation to adapt to modern forms of corruption facilitated by cryptocurrencies.
The challenges identified include the difficulty in supervising encrypted digital currencies, especially decentralized ones like Bitcoin, and the struggle to identify and process transactions due to their non-recognition in the country.
