CFTC Clears Phantom Wallet to Access Regulated Derivatives Markets Without Broker Registration
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has granted Phantom wallet a “no-action” approval. Allowing it to connect users to regulated derivatives markets without registering as a broker.
The decision enables Phantom to act as a non-custodial interface linking users directly to licensed trading platforms. Marking a key step in integrating crypto wallets with traditional financial markets. Under the ruling, Phantom does not handle user funds and instead functions as a bridge to registered brokers and futures markets, which allows it to avoid intermediary classification. However, the approval comes with conditions and does not extend to DeFi derivatives or prediction markets, meaning broader crypto trading use cases remain outside the scope.
The move is seen as a major regulatory signal, offering clarity for self-custodial wallet providers and potentially setting a precedent for how crypto software interacts with regulated financial systems in the future.
