Canada Proposes Ban on Crypto Political Donations Under Strong and Free Elections Act

Canada has introduced the “Strong and Free Elections Act,” a proposed law that would ban cryptocurrency donations in federal elections to strengthen transparency and prevent foreign interference.

The bill aims to block “hard-to-trace” contributions—including crypto, money orders, and prepaid cards—across political parties, candidates, and third-party advertisers.

The move reflects growing concerns over crypto’s pseudo-anonymity, which makes it difficult to verify donor identities and trace funding sources. If passed, the law would impose strict penalties for violations and expand enforcement powers, signaling a broader global trend toward tighter regulation of digital assets in political financing.
