BRICS Expansion on the Agenda: Summit to Discuss Member Differences

BRICS enlargement will take center stage at the upcoming summit in August, according to Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin Spokesman.
While acknowledging the significance of the topic, Peskov indicated that participants are likely to discuss differences during the meeting. With a surge in interest from nations wanting to join the BRICS group, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, the expansion will be a focal point of the discussions in Johannesburg.
Peskov mentioned that variations in viewpoints exist within BRICS members regarding expansion, particularly in light of China’s rapid enlargement push facing opposition from India and Brazil. The summit, scheduled for Aug. 22-24, will address these expansion-related issues, allowing member state leaders to share their positions via video link. The summit holds great potential for BRICS to strengthen its authority and influence on the global stage, signaling its pragmatic approach and growing significance.
