Bolivia Considers Integrating USDT Into National Financial System After Reversing Crypto Ban

Bolivia is evaluating the integration of Tether’s USDT into its national financial system. Marking a significant policy shift just two years after lifting its long-standing ban on cryptocurrency transactions.

The proposal would allow USDT to circulate alongside the Bolivian boliviano and the U.S. dollar, aiming to improve cross-border payments, remittances, and access to dollar-denominated assets amid an ongoing shortage of physical U.S. dollars. The move follows a 630% surge in crypto transaction volume since restrictions were eased in 2024. Highlighting rapidly growing adoption among businesses and consumers.

Although the plan remains under technical review and has not granted USDT legal tender status, officials are developing a regulatory framework for banks, digital wallets, and payment providers while strengthening anti-money laundering standards. If approved, Bolivia could become one of the first countries to formally integrate a privately issued stablecoin into its national payments infrastructure. Reflecting the increasing role of digital dollars in emerging markets.
