Certik, a blockchain security firm, discloses that financial losses linked to security incidents in the web3 industry surpassed $1.84 billion in 2023, as outlined in its annual web3 security report.
The report identifies 751 security incidents last year, amounting to a total loss of $1,840,879,064—a notable 51% decrease from the $3.7 billion reported in 2022. A significant portion of these losses, $1.11 billion, stems from just 10 incidents. November emerges as the costliest month, witnessing $363.36 million lost across 45 incidents, while the third quarter saw the highest number of incidents, totaling 183, with losses reaching $686.558 million. Notably, compromised private keys, constituting only 6.3% of security incidents, accounted for the most substantial losses at $880.89 million in 47 incidents. The report underscores the critical importance of secure private key management.
BNB Chain (BNB) led in security incidents with 387, resulting in $134 million in losses, followed by Ethereum (ETH) with 224 incidents and $686 million in losses. Additionally, 35 incidents affecting multiple chains incurred $799 million in losses, underscoring the challenges associated with cross-chain transactions.
