Bitcoin Sideways Phase Signals the End of 1% Portfolio Allocations

According to Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan, Bitcoin is currently experiencing what he calls its “silent IPO” phase.
A period of sideways price movement as early investors take profits and larger institutions begin to take positions. This transition mirrors how major tech companies entered public markets after IPOs and is viewed as a pivotal growth stage for Bitcoin.
Hougan argues that as Bitcoin’s volatility declines and its institutional backing increases, the traditional 1% allocation to crypto in diversified portfolios is no longer sufficient. With Bitcoin evolving into a mainstream asset, he recommends a starting allocation of 5% rather than the minimal 1%. This shift marks a new era for digital-asset allocations and signals growing confidence in Bitcoin’s long-term role in portfolios.
