Binance Helps Block $1.2 Million DAO Governance Attack in Less Than 48 Hours

Binance says its security team detected a malicious governance proposal targeting an unnamed decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) with less than 48 hours remaining before execution, potentially putting approximately $1.2 million in treasury tokens at risk.
The proposed attack exploited a low barrier for submitting governance proposals, illustrating how weaknesses in voting and governance processes can threaten crypto projects even when their underlying smart-contract code is secure. After identifying the threat, Binance alerted the affected project and coordinated with centralized exchanges listing the token to temporarily close deposits, while the project’s community ultimately voted against the malicious proposal before it could execute.
The incident highlights a growing category of crypto security risk centered on governance manipulation rather than conventional software exploits. Binance contrasted the successful intervention with incidents such as the July BonkDAO attack, which drained roughly $20 million in BONK tokens after an attacker accumulated enough voting power to approve a malicious transfer. Binance says it now spends approximately $300 million annually on compliance, with nearly 1,500 employees working in related functions, while its fraud-detection systems reportedly intercepted $10.53 billion in potential fraud and anomalous activity between 2025 and Q1 2026. The case demonstrates how real-time monitoring and rapid coordination among projects and exchanges can become an important defense layer as attackers increasingly target governance processes, access controls, and human behavior rather than blockchain code itself.
