Billions Locked in Time: The Forgotten Casascius Coins Still Holding 38,000 Bitcoin

An estimated 38,000 Bitcoin, worth over $4 billion, remain sealed inside the legendary Casascius coins. Physical tokens made of brass, silver, and gold that date back to Bitcoin’s early days.
Each coin hides a private key beneath a tamper-proof hologram, allowing the holder to redeem the digital fortune within. Yet thousands of these coins have never been opened, leaving an enormous amount of Bitcoin untouched for over a decade.
Originally created in 2011 by software engineer Mike Caldwell, Casascius coins were a bridge between the digital and physical worlds — a way to “hold” Bitcoin in your hand. Production ceased in 2013 due to U.S. regulatory pressure. But the unredeemed coins have since become symbols of lost wealth and crypto nostalgia. Their continued existence reveals not only how much early Bitcoin remains dormant but also how physical artifacts once shaped the foundations of the digital economy we know today.
