Big AI’s Push for Regulation Could Backfire as U.S. Lawmakers Consider Tougher Controls

Major AI companies’ calls for stronger safety regulation may be producing far more aggressive government intervention than the industry anticipated.
The Bitcoin.com analysis argues that large AI labs—particularly Anthropic—have supported measures such as third-party safety evaluations and coordinated limits on frontier AI development, prompting critics to accuse them of pursuing “regulatory capture” that could make compliance too expensive for smaller competitors. But Washington is now considering proposals that go considerably further. The Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act, introduced by Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Greg Casar, would halt certain advanced AI development and impose penalties of up to 20 years in prison for violations. Sanders has also proposed taking a 50% public equity stake in major AI companies to help finance a $7 trillion public fund. The developments highlight an unintended risk for leading AI firms: inviting regulation to manage AI safety and competition could ultimately give governments significantly more control over the industry itself.
